Essay: COAL

Introduction: Most of the white men generally hate the black men. Children have a natural dislike for the black. And their parents become very sorry when they blacken their fingers with black coal. For It is so useful that they cannot do without it.

Where found: Coal is found in deep mines in layers. The way in which it is formed deep below the earth and taken out is very strange. Years ago in the long past there were earthquakes and the whole forests went deep down the earth. They remained there for thousands of years and dug the coal out. It is very hard to work in the coal mines. Coolies work there with lamps in hard. Sometimes the mine may catch fire or some layer of earth may give In. And then a large number of coolies have to die. There are coal mines in England, U. S. A. India and in some other parts of the world.

Uses: Coal burns and makes fire in the kitchen and our food Is cooked. It burns in the boiler of ships. steamers and trains and they run as fast as they can. It burns in the furnace and in the factories and mills and the giant machineries arid engines move on in full swing. Without them most of these will be inactive. Although petrol is trying to take its place but It has not yet been able to push It out of use. For petroleum comes out of coal when it is under the earth for longer periods. And from it also comes coal tar which gives us fast days. So it is as useful as ever.

Peasant of Bangladesh

Introduction: Bangladesh is mainly an agricultural country. Agriculture is the base of our economy and rural life. Agriculture still employs bulk of our population. So peasants are the backbone of our agricultural output, our food production and agro-based industries. Peasants are the vital element of our country and economy.

Condition: A peasant is a farmer who owns or leases a piece of land and which he cultivates himself. In our country most of the peasants are generally small farmers. They possess a small piece of land. They have no ploughs and bullocks to cultivate their lands. Many of them do not have enough land to grow enough food for them. In that case they cultivate the lands of those who have large areas of lands and do not cultivate themselves. They get a stipulated share of the produce. The share is generally half or one third of the total produce.

There are some landless peasants. They till other’s land and take a share of the produce. They work hard to manage subsistence for their family. Through they work hard in the rain and sun; they lead a very miserable life.

Solvent Peasants: A minority of peasants are very rich. They are landlords because they have large areas of land. They produce more than what need. So they can lead a prosperous and easy-going life. The landlords are influential people in the villages. They also contribute to various developmental initiatives of the villagers like setting up schools, mosques, colleges, dispensaries, orphanage etc.

Knowledge: The learning methods of our peasants are relatively obsolete. They still use bullocks and plough to till the lands. They do not have knowledge about proper seed time, insecticide, and good harvesting. As a result, they often do not get good crops. They depend on nature for good harvest instead of applying new and scientific methods in the fields. A many of our peasants are illiterate and poor. They lack knowledge about better cultivation and how to yield more crops. They are often unable or unwilling to apply new methods and approach in cultivation. And they are also often unable to buy tractors, machinery, sufficient fertilizers and insecticides, and irrigate their lands. All these are responsible for poor agricultural output and poor conditions of our peasants.

Quick Navigation: HANDICRAFTS OF BANGLADESH

Peasants of our country play the vital role of producing food grains. They also produce various other crops like jute, wheat, sugarcane, maze, and various other crops and provide raw materials for many mills and factories base on them. They thus contribute to country’s economic activities and GDP.

Economic Condition: Though they feed the nation, and run country’s economy, the overall condition of our peasants are very miserable. Many of our peasants cannot afford square meals. They cannot send their children to school because they cannot bear the educational expenses. They do not get good house, pure drink, costly clothes or any modern luxuries or comforts. They are ill-clad and ill-treated in the society. They are poor, illiterate, and superstitious and they suffer from malnutrition and various diseases. But nobody not even the government care for their miseries and sufferings. They lead a very unhappy and neglected life. Govt. often takes some development projects for them, but most of it does not reach the deserving and hapless peasants. As a result, they are born poor. They live a poor life and die poorly.

Conclusion: Govt. and wealthy persons in the society must do something effective for our unhappy peasants. Mostly, our peasants do not get due prices of their agricultural produce. So they remain poor. Govt. can take a comprehensive distribution system of country’s cultivable land and bring landless and small peasants under beneficiary projects. They should be trained about new and scientific methods of cultivation. They should be given loans without interest or no easy terms. And in must be ensured that the peasants get right price of their corps. Otherwise, their condition will remain unchanged.

The provision that every student should teach at least two illiterate adults how to read and write as part of his regular course of studies should be given effect with utmost sincerity. Students also can use the local education institutions especially the primary schools as the main centers for spreading mass literacy.

The Farakka Problem

Introduction: Rivers are very important in the life of a nation. The three most important rivers in Bangladesh are the Padma, the Brahmaputra and the Megna. They irrigate almost the whole of Bangladesh and connect different parts of the country with one another. In fact, these rivers control the economy and determine the fate of our nation to a large extent.

What is Farakka problem: Since the partition of India in 1947, these rivers have become international and the question of sharing their waters has come up. In the matter of sharing the waters India has an advantage. All the big rivers like the Ganges, the Brahmaputra, the Teesta and many other small rivers following through Bangladesh have their origin India. So India can obstruct the natural flow of one or more of these international rivers to her own advantage, but to the serious disadvantage of Bangladesh. International law, however, prohibits this kind of obstruction. Yet, India has caused this kind obstruction with the natural flow of the Ganges at Farakka in West Bengal and thus has created for Bangladesh a problem which is known as the Farakka Problem.

Farakka Barrage: Farakka in West Bengal is twelve miles away from the Bangladesh border. The Government of India built a barrage across the Ganges at this point on the plea of flushing the Hoogly River to save the Calcutta port. Using Ganges water to flush the Hoogly river bed is technically unsound and waterfall. Yet, the government of India put barrage with its feeder canal in operation on condition that it would diver only 16 thousand cusec of water maximum for 10 days from 21st April to 31st May, 1975, ensuring supply of the remaining quantity of water to Bangladesh. But ever after the expiry of the said period since 1st June, 1975. India has been unilaterally diverting greater part of the Ganges water, creating serious problems for Bangladesh.

Problems created by India: In the first place, Bangladesh has to depend now on India and nature for water. Now overflow of water causes severe floods and shortage of water causes drought in Bangladesh. This is damaging the economy and affecting the ecology of the country. Secondly, the abnormal decrease in the flow of the Ganges water in the dry season owing to India’s withdrawal of it not only affects its navigability but also causes the surface and ground water levels to fall abnormally, particularly in the northern districts. This has a very adverse effect on the irrigation system and on the flora and fauna of the region. Thirdly, owing to the weakened river flow the sea has published the salinity belt more than a hundred miles into the interior, affecting agriculture and industry seriously.

Conclusion: However, a Joint River commission has been set up by the Government of Bangladesh and India to study the problems that the Farakka Barrage has created for Bangladesh and to suggest ways and means to solve them. The people of amicably and also to settle once for all the vexed question of equitable sharing of the waters of the Ganges and other international rivers.

Essay: Compulsory Free Primary Education

Introduction: Primary education consists in giving elementary knowledge of one's mother tongue, simple arithmetic, geography and hygiene. Such education is at the root of all kinds of education. Hence the importance of primary education in the life of an individual or nation is very great.

Why primary education be made free and compulsory: Majority of our people are very poor. They cannot afford to bear the high cost of education of their children. Education of any sort is beyond the means of our millions. Again, many of our poor villagers refuse to send their children to school owing to ignorance prejudice. They think that their children will do well if they stay at home or go to the field to help them in agriculture or other works.

Attitude of past governments towards the issue: The need for compulsory free primary education was left even in the closing years of the British rule in India. Once during the Pakistan rule the Government of the then East Pakistan were out to make people believe that they were going to start compulsory free primary education in one union of each thana. But later on it proved to be all hoax. After the liberation of the country different authorities at different times were reported to have given consideration to this burning issue but no action programme came out of their long-drawn deliberation. At long last in the closing years of the eighties the Government of General Ershad took a comprehensive programme of action to start compulsory free primary education throughout the country frrom January 1, 1991. But owing to an uprising predominantly of urban people General Ershad gave up power and his programme of introducing compulsory free primary education was abandoned. The former government of khaleda Zia have framed a new programme and according to it compulsory free primary education has been introduced in one thana in each district of the country since January 1, 1992.

Problems to be solved: There are various problems that hinders countrywide introduction of compulsory free primary education. The main problems are: lack of sufficient fund and accommodation of good and trained teachers, of suitable syllabi and apathy of children and their families towards education and large number of dropouts at the primary stage. The government is trying to deal with these problems.

Conclusion: It is hoped that in course of next few years the programme of introduction compulsory free primary education will be implement in phases and the country will get rid of the curse of illiteracy with the turn of the country.

On this day national flag is hoisted at half mast. Meetings and symposiums are held all over the country. Every Shahid Miner is covered with flowers and garland. The history of Banglees is not simple. We had to struggle to achieve state language as mother tongue. There is only a sate in the world which had to struggle to achieve state language as mother tongue. It is Bangladesh.

World Acceptation: On the 21st November, 1994, there was a 30th general meeting in UNESCO where a proposal was proposed for establishing the 21st February as International Mother Language day and it was accepted by all of 188 countries of UNESCO. Then UNESCO declared it as the International Mother Language Day on the 17th February, 1999.

History of Language: Both the British and Pakistan rulers conspired. In 1947 the Vice Chancellor of Aligar University Dr. Ziauddin Ahme declared that Urdu would be the only state language in Pakistan. Again on 20th February in 1952 Khaja d told that Urdu might be the state language of Pakistan and Hindi for India. Only three months after the birth of Pakistan, the education minister proposed for Urdu as state language. The Prime minister of Pakistan Liakot Ali khan and the Bengalee Muslim parliament member Khaja Najimmudddin also supported it. So, continuous strike was observed from 11.03.48 to 15.03.48 by the people of East Pakistan. On 21st March in 1948, Mohammad Ali Jinnah declared that Urdu would be the only state language in Pakistan. Again on 20th February in 1952 khaja Nzimuddin finally declared that Urdu would be the only sate language in Pakistan.

The Happenings in 21st February: 21st February is very remarkable in our history. Section 144 was declared in Dhaka but the students of Dhaka University came out in the street avoiding section 144 and many common people joined with them. When the procession advanced towards the present Shahid Minar, the poline fired and Rafiq, Salam, Jabbar and Barkat lost their lives. Then the government became afraid and was compelled to accept Bangla as a state language. It was a glorious victory and from then, the 21st February is observed every year to show respect for those heroic martyrs.

Celebration: The day begins with gun shorts and people wake up early in the morning on that day. A few boys and students do not sleep at night because they go to the Shaheed Minar at 12 p.m. Most people but on (wear) fine dress but a few boys and students put on Punjabis and trousers. Everybody holds a black badge as the symbol os mourning on their clothes. They walk to the Shahid Minar bare footed to show respect for the martyrs. After going there, they offer different kinds of flowers and flower garlands on the altar of the Shaheed Minar with great respect. They pray to Allah for the salvation of the martyr’s souls. Different social and cultural organizations and political parties bring out processing, hold meetings and arrange cultural programmes for observing the day. The national flag is kept half-mast on this day. It is government holiday. Bangladesh Beter and various TV channels broadcast special programmes on this occasion. Rich foods are offered to the jailors, orphans and the patients of the hospitals.

Conclusion: On 21st February we show respect for those heroic martyrs discussing and giving flowers. We all should remember the difficulties of Urdu if it was established as our sate language. If Urdu was established as our state language, we could never gain the independence of Bangladesh. So, we should use the mother tongue in all sectors and enrich it.
